Practical Tips

Getting There

Fly into Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ). Budget airlines serve major European hubs. Banja Luka Airport (BNX) is an alternative for cheaper flights.

Transportation

Rent a car for maximum flexibility, especially for rural areas. Public buses are reliable and very affordable. Taxis are cheap but always negotiate in advance.

Best Time

May-June or September-October for pleasant weather and fewer tourists. July-August is busy but lively. Winter offers skiing in Bjelašnica.

Money

Bosnia uses the Convertible Mark (BAM), pegged to the Euro. Credit cards are accepted in cities, but cash is essential in smaller towns. ATMs are widely available.

Language

Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian are the official languages. English is increasingly spoken, especially among younger people. Basic German is useful in some areas.

Safety

Bosnia is generally very safe for travelers. Like anywhere, stay aware in urban areas at night. The people are incredibly welcoming and will go out of their way to help.
