Where medieval colleges meet Harry Potter magic, and the world's greatest minds have walked for centuries.
Hi, I'm Eleanor. I studied at Oxford and stayed to become a guide. I've memorized every tower and hidden courtyard. This guide was last updated in May 2026.
Oxford Accent Note: Oxford English is often called "the clearest English" - the accent is closer to BBC English than most other British cities. You'll hear scholarly discussions everywhere. The local term is "Oxonian." We say "spires" poetically, and the famous "Dreaming Spires" phrase was coined by poet Matthew Arnold.

Farewell to Oxford
Oxford is 60 miles from London. Trains from Paddington take about 60 minutes. Oxford has no airport - the nearest are London Heathrow or Luton.
Oxford is very walkable. Cycling is popular but can be dangerous with traffic. Park and Ride is excellent if driving.
Most colleges are open to visitors during the day. Some close for exams or events. Christ Church is very popular - book ahead.
Several operators offer Harry Potter-themed walking tours. These are excellent for learning behind-the-scenes details.
Comfortable walking shoes, layers for weather, and a camera. Avoid wearing university attire (gowns) unless you're a member.
Oxford is scholarly and refined. Speak quietly near colleges. Don't wear headphones during college tours. Say "how do" as a greeting!

As a massive Harry Potter fan, Christ Church was a dream come true. Seeing the actual dining hall that inspired the Great Hall, the staircase where Snape says "Follow the spiders" - I was geeking out the entire time. My partner thought I'd lost my mind! The college is stunning even without the HP connection.

The Eagle and Child pub was the highlight of my trip. I'm a Tolkien and C.S. Lewis devotee, so standing in the room where the Inklings met was incredibly moving. The pub hasn't changed much since the 1940s. The academic atmosphere in Oxford is palpable - you can feel centuries of brilliant minds here.

Blenheim Palace is absolutely magnificent - I couldn't believe it was just 30 minutes from Oxford. The Baroque architecture is breathtaking, and the Churchill exhibition was fascinating. The formal gardens are beautiful, and the butterfly house was a delightful surprise. This was the perfect day trip from Oxford.

The Ashmolean Museum is one of the best museums I've ever visited - and it's free! The collection is extraordinary, from Egyptian artifacts to Renaissance art. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share their expertise. Magdalen College's grounds along the Cherwell were peaceful and beautiful.

Alice's Shop brought tears to my eyes - I'm a huge Carroll fan. Standing in the very shop where Alice Liddell bought her sweets, knowing Carroll was right there telling stories to the Liddell children - it's magical. The walk to the meadow where Carroll first told Alice in Wonderland was perfect.

Climbing St Mary's the Virgin tower was the best decision. The 360-degree views of Oxford's spires are unforgettable - you can see why Arnold called them "dreaming." The climb is steep but manageable, and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about Oxford's history.
