Walk the ancient walls, explore Viking history, and marvel at England's finest Gothic cathedral.

Hi, I'm Margaret. A Yorkie through and through - I've called this city home for 30 years. Nothing beats the shibboleth of a Yorkie accent. This guide was last updated in May 2026.

York Accent Note: The York accent is a classic Yorkshire dialect - we say "three" as "three," "home" as "yam," and "down" as "dahn." We're proud of our heritage and our city. You'll hear locals call ourselves "Yorkies." The city comes alive especially during the JORVIK Viking Festival in February and the York Mystery Plays.

Practical Tips

Getting There

York is 2 hours from London by train. Leeds Bradford Airport is the closest, about an hour away. York station is a 10-minute walk from the center.

Transportation

York is very walkable - most sights are within the city walls. The Park and Ride is excellent value if driving.

Attraction Pass

Consider the York Pass for discounts on multiple attractions. It pays for itself if you plan to visit many sights.

Ghost Tours

York is one of England's most haunted cities. The ghost tours are entertaining but can be touristy - look for specialized operators.

What to Pack

Layers for all weather, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera. The narrow medieval streets are beautiful but uneven.

Local Etiquette

Yorkies are friendly and proud. Don't call Yorkshire "part of the North" - we're a distinct county! Say "aye" and "nay" to blend in.

York Minster left me speechless. I've seen a lot of cathedrals in Europe, but the Great East Window literally took my breath away - it's the largest medieval stained glass window in the world. Climbing the central tower was worth every step. The view over the city and the surrounding Yorkshire countryside was unforgettable.

The JORVIK Viking Centre was incredible - I felt like I was transported back a thousand years. The recreated Viking street was so realistic, down to the smells and sounds. My kids were fascinated. The ride through the reconstructed city is something they'll never forget. York's Viking heritage is so well preserved here.

Walking the city walls was the perfect introduction to York. You get such a sense of the medieval layout - how everything was built within these defenses. The walls are so well preserved. We did the full circuit in about two hours, stopping at each gate. The view from the walls gives you a completely different perspective of the Minster.

The Shambles is even more charming than I expected - and I've seen Harry Potter films! The timber-framed buildings leaning over the narrow street create such an atmospheric medieval setting. I had a coffee at one of the tiny cafes and just people-watched for an hour. It's like stepping back in time.

Betty's Tea Rooms was everything I'd dreamed of - elegant Edwardian decor, perfectly prepared scones with clotted cream and jam, and the most delicioustea. It's a bit of a splurge but absolutely worth it for the experience. The wait can be long without a reservation, so book ahead!

The National Railway Museum is phenomenal - and free! Seeing the Flying Scotsman up close was thrilling for this train enthusiast. The collection of historic locomotives is world-class. The Yorkshire Dales day trip was a perfect contrast to the city - those limestone hills and drystone walls are so typically English.
